Google Pixel 7a

Google Pixel 7a Overview

Design and Display

Google Pixel 7a shares the same sleek color-matching side frames and metallic camera design as its counterparts, Google Pixel 7 and Google Pixel 7 Pro. You have four color options to choose from: Sea, Charcoal, Snow, and Coral. Interestingly, Coral is exclusively available through the Google Store in select markets like the US. Google has made an eco-friendly move by crafting the phone’s frames from 100% recycled aluminum. Additionally, the Pixel 7a boasts an IP67 dust and water-resistant rating. However, compared to its predecessor, it’s a bit heftier, weighing in at 192 grams, while the Pixel 6a weighed 178 grams.

Moving to the front of the device, Google has introduced a long-awaited upgrade to the refresh rate in its “a” series smartphones with Google Pixel 7a now refreshing at 90Hz, akin to the regular Pixel 7. The 6.1-inch FHD OLED display, shielded by Gorilla Glass 3, not only offers HDR support but also integrates an optical in-display fingerprint scanner for biometric authentication.

Camera

Yet another significant improvement of this device can be found in its camera capabilities. Google has upgraded from the dual 12MP sensors found in the Pixel 6a to a more advanced setup. Now, Google Pixel 7a features a primary 64MP sensor (with OIS) alongside a 13MP ultrawide sensor. According to the company, this 64MP camera boasts a sensor size that is 72% larger than the 12MP main shooter on the 6a. This marks a notable departure from the previous trend, where every other Pixel “a” series phone sported a 12MP primary camera.

This upgrade promises significantly improved camera performance, particularly in low-light situations. The inclusion of a 13MP ultrawide sensor is noteworthy, offering a wider field of view (120° compared to 114°) and now supporting autofocus. The selfie camera has also seen an upgrade from 8MP to 13MP, providing a wider field of view as well. Beyond just hardware enhancements, the Pixel 7a’s camera setup inherits all the software-based features from the regular Pixel 7 series, including Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, Real Tone, and more. Additionally, it’s slated to receive Google’s new AI-powered “Magic Editor” feature later this year.

Performance

In terms of performance, the Pixel 7a now runs on the Tensor G2 chip and Titan M2 security coprocessor, similar to other models in its lineup. In addition to the chipset upgrade, Google has also increased the RAM capacity from 6GB to 8 GB. This is complemented by 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage, with no option for expanding storage via an external micro SD card. The phone comes pre-installed with Android 13 and is scheduled to receive three major OS upgrades along with up to five years of security updates.

Battery and Others

Google Pixel 7a features a slightly smaller 4385mAh battery that supports 18W wired charging. Notably, Google is introducing wireless charging in its “a” series of smartphones. However, both wired and wireless chargers need to be purchased separately as Google doesn’t include them in the box. Additionally, the Pixel 7a comes equipped with dual speakers for audio output. Its wireless connectivity options include WiFi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, and NFC.
